Royal Lochnagar Selected Reserve 2009
Royal Lochnagar is a small Single Malt distillery in the Highland zone, famous for its Royal Warrant. It lies on the Abergeldie Estate near Crathie in Royal Deeside.
It is leased from the estate by Diageo and forms part of their Classic Malts Selection. Volumes are low, with the majority of production being used in Johnnie Walker blends.
Two “regular” Single Malt whiskies are currently produced. The 12-year-old with subtle notes of dry grass, nuts and spice. is the core release with the widest availability, and is bottled at 40 percent abv.
The Selected Reserve is released without an age statement at 43 percent abv. It comes from older spirits and commands a much higher price. It is richer and rounder with more fruitcake characters, and has less in common with the unaged spirit.
These are supplemented by special editions, including a popular House Baratheon bottling for Game of Thrones fans. The Distillers Edition is aged in casks previously used for sweet Muscat wine.
The distillery has two small stills and worm tubs which are only run twice per week. The rest in between allows the copper to rejuvenate. The worm tubs are kept warm for the same reason. This means that, despite the small size of the equipment, copper contact is maximized and the whisky is not overly sulfury.
